Manual Revision

We are planning to upgrade class manuals during Christmas Break. Related suggestions should be provided in comments. At this point our goal is to add photos of Ubuntu and Windows 7 using Open Office 3.x and Microsoft Office 2010 to the books so the current environments are represented. Some minor cleaning up is also anticipated — the last major update was in 2005.

Updated 2010 financials are posted http://alt-fw.org/public/?page_id=919.

Bottom line: up by $301.54.

Sample Cover letter was posted in the Resources section in .odt and .pdf formats. Resources may be downloaded and edited by anyone for their use. Free.

December is Coming

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Proverbs 19:17 (KJV)

December is coming, and with it the season in which most charities receive the majority of donations for the year. If you are thinking of donating to a charity, you can verify their legal tax exempt status from the government web site irs.gov. You can verify how much money they received each year and how they spent it by downloading their form 990’s from irs.gov. You may also find more information on them posted on the charity site guidestar.org.

We also publish this information (and more) here in our 501(c)(3) Info, at top center of your computer screen, and we have just posted summary financials for FY2010 as of last week (in the menu at top, click Money).

If you are thinking of donating to a worthy cause this year, please consider the many, many unemployed workers in this area and consider a generous donation to Adult Life Training, Inc. to help us help these citizens learn computer job skills so that they can get employed again.

Heart Disease in African American Women

Our focus is providing computer job skills training so people can get a job, but occasionally we feel that other good information should be passed on to those who see our comments for their safety or to improve their quality of life.

This web site (http://www.student.ipfw.edu/~nashja01/heartdisease/) provides an abundance of information important to one demographic we serve, mature women of African descent.

More than 41million women have a form of cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart disease, or congestive heart failure) in the United States. More than 450,000 of these women die each year from this condition. Coronary heart disease is the number one cause of death of women 65 years and older.

African American women are predisposed to heart disease because they have the most risk factors … Women can reduce their risk for heart disease just by knowing the risk factors and taking steps to reduce their individual risk.

If you are a woman of African descent, or know one that you care about, we encourage your review of this information.
