Weekly Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
The Adult Life Training, Inc. Advisory Board meets weekly on Wednesday at 3:00PM in ALC Room 136. Minutes for each week are appended below, with most recent on top.
2014–07-16 (NOTES)
I realize some of you visit this page to keep up with what we are doing. During this summer our Advisory Board meetings became informal because the Karen children wanted to be picked up an hour earlier for more activities, which meant Jennifer was driving the van instead of participating in our meeting, and Horizon school let out, which meant Dawn and Alondra were not able to get here early for the meeting either. Mary and I were here. Also Jennifer and Dawn both scored J.O.B.S. (YEA!) which is good, but it also affected the time at which they could be available. Jillian has been driving both to and from our location which is a serious help and lets Jennifer work a little longer before she leaves to get here. I especially am grateful for being FREE to go home at night instead of driving children home and getting done at 11:00 PM. God Bless Jillian!
So what we have been up to: well, Abundant Life has one activity for them for about 1/2 hour, then one of our volunteers does a crafting or game activity. Then there is a snack from the ladies at Abundant Life, and after the snack usually some free play in the gym — soccer has been the big thing recently. We have crafted crayon art (Alondra), fruit pizza (Mary), a trip to the ALC clothing bank for the girls (Dawn), some off the wall games (John 3rd), and I don’t remember what all else. But we have been busy. And if you are out this way when we meet, please feel free to stop in and say “Hai!”.
It has been a wild, rapidly moving experience and we are happy, happy, happy it is going so well.

Alondra says, “This coca cola is goood”. Four people corrected Alondra’s grammar.
What we have so far for field trips are: Roller Dome, Put-Put,And science central. Roller Dome 3$ a person. Put-Put is $3.50 each game. Science Central is 8$ a person. We think the Roller Dome is a really good event for the kids to do, we think Science Central would be a good one to, if we can find out if the radio station is doing their annual 1$ event.

We are going to try and identify the top activities for next week. Before next week john will get a list of the activities we proposed last week. We will go over it next week because we are short on time.
It is time for our Fund drive again. Last year we did a recycling fund-raiser. This year we are going to reach out to local businesses and let them know we would love to help them recycle any unwanted electronics. This point in time it is important because Microsoft is discontinuing the support of windows XP starting in April. As such many local business will need to purchase new computers and dispose of their old hardware. If we get the information out soon enough business will be able to recycle legally without having to pay anything and we will make 3 dollars per computer.
We need to find someone who understands scheduled procedures in Microsoft windows server so we can shut down our computers automatically at closing time.

New BusinessSynopsis of last year: We were about 90 dollars ahead of where we were financially. Helped several hundred in tutoring. The computers got refurbished two of them died and we are up an running now. We will add windows server 2012 as soon as possible to manage user rights and policies. The year started off with a bang with 6 SCSEP (senior aid) volunteers working on their job skills and helping with cleaning abundant life. So we are off to a raging start. The Karen children will probably have a ton of homework because the just missed a week of school due to the polar vortex. So tonight we will focus on homework tutoring. New BusinessWe are closed this week and the next two weeks. Doing cleaning and computer maintenance that needs to happen every year. We will re-open on January 6th.This coming year our treasurer Phillip Lock has promised to add some formality to our accounting process. Even though the amount of money we currently handle is small it would be good to have a formal process and occasional audits. We already post our financial on our website about once or twice a month. Income in 2013 was around 2,000.The activity tonight will be homework and then most likely free play or perhaps making ornaments if the time permits.

Each of the last two weeks during the gym activity a ball was kicked and a gym light was broken at a cost of 40 dollars per bulb. At the start of this week the Abundant Life Church, which donates our office space, electric, phone, Internet, and more to us, installed all new lighting in the gym. Each fixture holds 4 fluorescent bulbs which cost 150 dollars. As such the church has asked that we no longer allow the use of any balls in the gym. The building manager was less than edified by John’s suggestion that for the craft tonight we teach the children how to make potato cannons. John has a strange sense of humor. We assured the manager that no potato canons would be made and no balls used.

We received a check for 210 dollars from ace recycling. Which is up 12 dollars from our records. The youth leader at abundant life church was taken a check for 105 dollars. It was suggested that we keep the check for our own needs because they are many. We in return advised they upgrade the internet for the youth cafe. Dallas said he would think about it. We felt it only fair that since they youth helped raise the money the should have a say in how it is spent.
Artimis was a huge success with the children last week. We are reviewing the layout in the room and discovering which computers are not capable of running the program to improve the activity for next time.
The Abundant Life Church expressed concerns that member of the public who was using the computer lab was refusing to leave when the staff would come by to lock the doors. The computers have been fitted with software that shuts them down at closing.

He is not at the meeting today because he is upstairs in the electronic repair room attempting to re-purpose enough parts to build one more working computer for the daycare.
John the founder has now messed up the website while changing the theme. He was hoping for a layout with three columns. The menu on the right hand site is malfunctioning. He will most likely have to change the theme again to resolve this issue. King Geoffry would have his head for this.

Internet filtering needed- We are going to have to add a filtering device to the computer lab. Previously we had used a filter that actually read each web page and inspected it for inappropriate material. It also detected spy ware and mal-ware and attempts at tracking web users which annoyed staff to the point that we gave up and removed the filtering. This could place us in violation of the child internet protection act. Since the staff network is now separate from the network that goes into the lab; staff objections should no longer be a problem. Areas effected are the community room, the bridge, the daycare and the up-rise cafe where children and youth may access the internet.
New to us flat screens- We sent in our third gay-lord of recycled electronics to Ace recycling. We don’t know how much they are going to pay us yet being that this is the first one they are going to pay us for. But we can use this to gauge how much income we can make with the recycling program. Ace will be bringing us some flat screens for our lab and some ram chips for our computers. We plan to have a least on event together this year with the revolution youth event and split the money. Ace estimates that it would bring in between four and five thousand on one Saturday.
Nash out of town next week- The Nash family will be going down to Springfield Alabama for the ignite conference. So John will not be here next week.
Mary brought the ingredients to make a fruit pizza with the kids tonight. Paul will be going to Happy’s Pizza this evening for the actual meal.
Computers for sale- We also have some computers we don’t intend to refurbish that we will place on Craig’s list. We will probably sell them for 20 bucks. The metal frame on the outside would cost 35 just to purchase. They are more for those individuals familiar with computer hardware vs someone just looking for a cheap computer.

We are doing some computer refurbishing and repair and we will have our first recycling pick up at the end of this week. Hopefully we will now be rid of all junk and have a minimum of usable stuff.
We refurbished the Abundant Life firewall security and routers for separate circuits for various areas of the church. We still have to complete a fifth circuit for firewall, router and wiring for a school that is renting part of the church campus. This is one of the services we can provide to non-profits is they ask for our help.
We had a meeting with the Abundant Life staff today to redefine the the tasks and schedules of our SCSEP (senior aids) today. We hope to have the scheduling posted by the end of the week.
Our attempt at having the children select a project form the catalog did not go as hoped because the children are so poor that they cannot even afford five dollars to pay for the projects. What we need is to find a small grant so we can purchase the supplies for the children.

We had a number of computers break from switching to EdUbuntu. Our goal in switching was to have quality educational games for children of all age groups in both the daycare and the Karen children who use the computers, which is why EdUbuntu was made. However, this version proved to be quite unstable. We were down to about two working computers last week. We now have eight computers functioning again by switching to Linux Mint. We have kept the Windows 7 which we already had on each also, but we have not resolved the problem with the explorer.exe file being infected (or falsely being reported as infected) with the Win.Trojan.Bamital-1158 virus. We can’t tell if the virus is real (we had a network invasion last month) or if it is a false trigger in ClamAV. Bamital! Bamital to heck.
Jennifer will be sure to remind the children to bring their craft selection and funds needed. Hopefully they have not forgotten due to the break we took last week for the 4th of July. What we really need is a grant so we can do some nicer projects without placing the financial burden on the children.
John has prepared a written response to the re-entry Coordinator at Rockville Correctional Facility explaining the services that we offer. After review of the letter we have decided to change “self supporting” to “self-supporting” and “self paced” to “self-paced”. The English teacher in Mary deemed the hyphen necessary. There were a couple other small grammatical changes but otherwise the letter was accepted as written. The letter was surprisingly coherent, considering that it was written by John, who is male, and as such has difficulty with words bigger than “ugh” and “rock”.
By partnering with Indiana facilities to get their own computer equipment and working with them to build a curriculum appropriate for them using ours as a starting point, it should be possible to launch a self-sustaining program across the State at only a minimum up-front cost of the computer equipment for each facility and a technical support person to assist when needed. The major teaching staff would be based upon a “Pay It Forward” concept where exiting personnel receive help in exchange for their commitment to teach others themselves. If a grant could be found to fund the computer hardware there would be almost no cost at all and the program would last indefinitely.

Paradigm is extensible to cover the entire state without cost using a pay it forward philosophy.

Verizon Foundation’s ThinkFinity.org has started a speaking series that looks promising. A link was posted in our blog.
ATR teleconference was today. Noteworthy points include:
- We want 3461 participants for the year in ATR III. After the first month of year two we have 346 client which is about right on target.
- The Access to Recovery provider forum will be November 18th (This Friday) at public safety academy. Any person or agency interested is invited to join us for that informal session.
- There will be training Dec 6th and 7th in Marion county. This will be the last policy and procedures training for this year. Anyone who wishes to participate in ATR III after December 31st must have had this training at some point in the year.
In December there will be a large number of warriors returning to us from in-country deployment as Operation Iraqi Freedom ends. The veterans administration has promised all returning warriors will receive 30, 60, 90 day counseling through veterans administration. We do not know what the impact will be on ATR. We also don’t know what the need will be for employment services since we specialize in services to help those having difficulty finding employment such as Seniors and those recovering from addictions.
Shepherd’s house in Fort Wayne has 7 beds available for any homeless veterans with an honorable discharge. Contact phone #260-424-2500.
Due to Thanksgiving Holiday next week we will be closed Thursday and Friday. SCSEP (senior aides) will be working 8 hours on Monday and Tuesday so as to still receive a full paycheck.
We need to get a Google+ page up for Adult Life Training.
There is an opportunity to get some online advertising from a Google Grants program. We would most likely meet the eligibility requirements. The program would provide the funding for Google AdWords pointing to our website. This would allow more persons who need computer job skill training to locate us. While talking with Google it was discovered that our website ranks number one in Google search listings for ‘Free Computer Training in Fort Wayne Indiana‘. To qualify as the first unsponsored link in a Google listing is a rare and coveted occurrence.

The WIN (Worldwide Interactive Network) administrator / manager training is tomorrow at Ivy Tech. The training is for administrators of the system in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. We were the first organization in the State outside of the Indiana DWD to have the KeyTrain system, and we appreciate that they have included us in the new WIN system. We use this capacity to teach soft job skills (reading, math, business writing) compatible with the national Work Keys system that provides impartial certification of job seekers’ skill levels via a test at the DWD and a resulting National Work Certificate. By requiring the National Work Certificate employers can be more certain of each potential new hire’s job skills: less problems where the employer discovers they have hired someone who can’t make change or read instructions. The KeyTrain was a good system and the WIN is like KeyTrain but with several significant improvements.
We have been accepted to attend tier 2 training with the Military Family Research Institute in cooperation with the Indiana National Guard and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration by Star Behavioral Health Providers. This is a special invitation because we do not provide behavioral counseling, but the training will help us better provide job skills training and employment counseling to our Warriors. The training is all day next Wednesday and Thursday at Grace Collage.
We received a replacement PC related to a gift from the Nash family and used it to replace the slowest (20-year old PC) in the lab. This is a massive upgrade for that seat which formerly had a 350MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and no Windows. The new PC has already become the favorite for SCSEP participants and students in the lab.

The access to recovery conference call for providers was this morning. They have 917 enrolled and need to have 1819 so they are 974 clients short of goal promised in their grant request. Meaning each week each RC needs to admit four new people into the program. During the meeting we were asked if there were ways to spend more of the money because of the 1400 per client they are spending an average of 400 per client. I pointed out that they could send some of their clients to us so they get employed and stay recovered. This did cause some chuckling.
Memo 38 was discussed so anyone involved in the correctional system and any woman with any age child are acceptable into the program. Indiana Arms will be September 27-28 and it will be free this year at the Indiana government center and their will be 9 to 11 continuing educations units available.

Operation Immersions was both informative and entertaining. We survived death by power point and ate lots of food.
The biggest defining thing on relationships is the closeness they feel toward their battle buddy. The change they have gone through can cause friction when being reunited with their family. In the full-time military, there is a three week period of adjustment when our warriors return from deployment before they are reunited with their families. It is well structured adjustment time when they work on being returned to their families.
Indiana National Guard goes through the same training and the same conditions as full-time military. They are deployed just as long and have just as difficult a time being reunited with their families. However, they only get a three day adjustment period. When the National Guard go home, they are just released to families without time to adjust.
Additionally, when full-time personnel return home, they still have a job and a paycheck. The National Guard members usually find themselves unemployed. There is a significant need for an adjustment in our laws to provide parity.
The relationships involved are different than what we encounter. Our Warriors are trained to be independent and self sufficient. They trust their battle buddy with their life, but they may not trust an outsider that may not have military experience. This impacts our ability to help military personnel recover from addictions. As it is a very private problem, they may not want to admit a weakness or a need and they may have extreme trust issues with an outsider.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our national guard military who are undoubtedly spending the week away from their families filling sand bags and building walls to protect our cities from flooding. God Bless America and our troops. Amen.

DAC Grant was applied for, but not likely to receive anything because even though our work is important to sustained recovery from addictions, it is not consistent with the two stated areas in which DAC makes grants: judicial and prevention. Still, we can always hope – we are just not really consistent with what this particular agency would normally fund. Thank you to Jennifer and Cammy for helping managing the office so John could write the grant.

John has yet to find the time to write anything up for the DAC grant to fund a secretary due to lack of having a secretary to free up some of his time in order to do it.
New Business
We discussed some personnel issues to try and determine where everyone would be best suited.
Cammy has volunteered to come in tomorrow at 9 am and then Jennifer volunteered to come in and take over at 11:30 am to work as the secretary to free up Johns day so that he will be able to write the DAC grant.
Catholic Charities is finishing up the recertification process for participants. After the recertification is completed there will be a new group of 7 or 8 who will start here. We will use the ones who remain to help tutor the new group of participants. They are expected to start within the next couple of weeks.
Carl Griffin has also accepted our offer to sit on our advisory board he could not be here this week but will be joining us next week.
There will be a DAC meeting April 4th at noon. The all DAC meeting last Friday was very informative and there were a number of useful presentations. One presenter in particular mentioned the Karen culture and the use of drugs. In particular our failure to educate them in differences in culture and laws concerning the use of drugs. It is considered ordinary and normal to use and opiate packaged like gum called thin and it is also common to participate in the use of meth-amphetamine called Yaba. Fort Wayne has the 2nd largest refugee population on earth the largest population is in Burma.
Jennifer and John will be participating in Operation Immersion April 19-21. This will act as their 2011 Semi-annual provider meeting for all ATR providers. Operation Immersions will provide the ATR staff the opportunity to experience life as a soldier and gain a better understanding of Military Culture and the challenges that military personnel face regarding substance abuse. Carl from Eagle’s nest will also ride down with us.
Abundant Life Church got two new van’s last week a 12 seater and a seven seater. Cammy will provide a copy of her driver’s license to ALC and asked to be placed on the insurance list and be able to drive one of the new vans instead of her own van to assist with pick up.
There is a training video on addressing suicidal thoughts and how to help prevent it. The link to the video is posted on our web site.
DEA take back for prescription drugs is scheduled for April 30th at several Fort Wayne area drug stores. There will be law enforcement officers present but no questions will be asked.
Chick-Fillet Simulcast Leadership training will be on May 6th at ALC. For more information or to register visit www.abundantlifecares.com/store

John and Jennifer made it to the training session on both days learning lots of valuable information. To be allowed to participate ATR clients must meet all of these qualifications. They must be addicted, they must be legally considered and adult, the must live in one of the ten counties where ATR is available, There total family income must be less than 200% of federal poverty level. They must be motivated and must be there voluntarily. In addition to those requirements they must meet at least one of the following requirements. They must have used methamphetamine the last 90 days, or be in prison and scheduled to be released withing the next 6 months, or is a woman who is pregnant, or is a woman with at least one dependent child under one year of age, or has ever been in the us military. In the case of us military persons their income can be as much as 500% of federal poverty level and they can live anywhere in Indiana.
We have developed and articulation with eagles nest youth center to help them by providing ATR trainers and build up their program. We will then begin building trainers for two more organizations yet to be named that will be located on the south west and north west sides of the city.
One of the interesting things learned from training is the importance of employment in maintaining sobriety. We were informed that 80% of the variability in success is tied directly to employment. It is critically important that we succeed in our mission to get our clients employed. One of alternative forms of employment is teaching them to build their own business. Our agency will be rated on the number of people who get employed or start working on a college degree.
We need to explore additional methods of getting funding so they can get a college degree.
There maybe some transportation issues with the Burmese tonight due to conflicting church events but it will be worked out somehow.

There will be REQUIRED training at the Fort Wayne / Allen County Safety Academy / Training Center Feb 7 and 8 from 9:00 to 4:00. While each agency is permitted only two ‘priority’ seats, all ALTi instructors should attend: there are usually seats available and this training is requisite for WITS access.
Our ATR3 renewal application was completed and sent to the required e-mail address last year. It should be processed soon. We verified all the documents to be included with Indiana ATR Program Manager Eric Scott when at the training in South Bend, so hopefully everything is as they need it to be. Sis. Hoskins at the OFBCO was able to confirm receipt of the materials, but she could not yet confirm that she has everything that is supposed to be included.
Burmese youth computer class
Discussion proceeded at length, mostly upon the topics of transportation logistics and alternatives. There is only (legal) space for 11 youths in the van which Abundant Life lends to us to pickup and return these youth. Bro. Porter wonders if he might be able to persuade several CDL bus drivers from ALC to take turns driving a bus to pick up and return these youth on Wednesday. We have had to turn away six (6) youths because we do not have (legal) space to transport them. Other alternatives were to meet at a different building, but without computers, or to meet on Sunday evening. The Burmese youth program will continue, and we will work on the outstanding issues. John will meet once a month with Bro. Porter to trade information.

Opportunity through Microsoft to refurbish computers there is no other refurbisher in ft Wayne so we were accepted certain criteria was specified then could get licensed for 6 dollars but there are some catches… year one 500 can be refurbished the problem is that if the computer does not have a sticker full version must be purchased at retail… raising costs so at this point its on hold… considering just using ubuntu
