03AUG2015 Important note:
“If you upgrade through Microsoft’s free method, your existing licenses will be replaced with a device-based license entitlement. Be sure you don’t have active Software Assurance before you use this method, as you’ll lose those benefits once you replace your licenses with these entitlements.” Link back to source:
From Microsoft, the instructions to get your free update from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to Windows 10 are at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade?ocid=win10_wol_help_upgrade
Notice all links in this post are to legitimate Microsoft servers (microsoft.com) and not 3rd party sources that could be compromised. Get your Microsoft software from Microsoft.
On the three systems we have upgraded, it works smoothly, quickly, and exactly as promised with most previously installed programs continuing to work after the upgrade. I did find the Internet links to our DVR security boxes were broken after the upgrade as they rely on IE and ActiveX controls, which are no longer supported, and one previously jury rigged book that was written as a Windows .hlp (help) file no longer worked.
Microsoft may drag us kicking and screaming into the 21st Century!
If you run an IT dept and want to do fresh installs on all PCs, Microsoft has made the .iso download available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO. Volume licensing has a download link in their Downloads in the VLSC. More information from Microsoft can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows#, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications, and if you are a Microsoft Windows Insider, at http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/07/28/windows-10-free-upgrade-available-in-190-countries-today/?OCID=WIP_r_Win10_Body_Blog_Win10rel.
