Several factors have converged to make a temporary change in our operating schedule desirable. We will remain open most days from 12:00-4:00 for public access to Internet and our computers, the Gaming Group will continue to meet on alternate Fridays 7:00PM until 10:30PM, and we anticipate resuming Federal SCSEP program Senior Aides training, Financial Literacy classes, and our new STEM programs in September 2019.
STEM – Science Technology Engineering Math
We have desired to implement a youth / young adult targeted STEM curriculum for the last several years. We need time to design or purchase appropriate components of this curriculum.
Practical Financial Literacy for Youth
We want to reconsider our financial literacy curriculum for college bound young adults as our field tests show the purchased material for youth is disappointing even though the material from the same vendor for adults is quite effective.
Goal Setting and Happiness Curriculum
“I want to be a millionaire” “I want a house on a lake where my grandkids can visit” “I want to invent the next life changing device.”
Almost all of the people we help have never thought about WHAT they want their life to mean, or what they want their retirement life to be like. They have never dared (or maybe bothered) to imagine what they want out of life. And just as most people end up financially broke and never have a net worth over a million dollars, so most people end up very unhappy when they get to the end of their life – and for the very same reason: they never thought about or planned what they wanted and so they never achieved what they wanted.
“If you aim at nothing you will hit it every time”
Just as it is possible for almost everyone in the United States to own well over a million dollars in net assets by the time they retire through following some simple but practical steps that everyone can do (we have been teaching free financial literacy classes that show how to do this) so it is also possible to plan and achieve the things in life that are really important to us IF we follow some simple but practical steps.
But how to teach this effectively as a class. We have a totally awesome tool that helps us identify our goals and plan, and the Passion Planner company has provided very nice planners to help, but we need to formalize a curriculum for life planning, maybe starting with parallels to financial planning – use the mind mapping technique to visualize what we want then a road map to identify our game changers and get there, and finally how to track our progress each day as we work at it and reflect daily, weekly, monthly, annually. Like financial investments, which start out slow but compound interest and over time become far more than the mere sum of what we contributed ourselves, so also our lives can build community and compound interest, of a sort, that snowballs more and more to bring us a fulfilling life.
Time is the most expensive thing we have. If we loose all our money we can eventually get it back, but time, once gone, is gone forever.
A dream is only a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline. As Isaac Singer said “Yesterday is a canceled check: tomorrow is a promissory note: TODAY is ready cash. Use it.”
Our Volunteers need some time off
Our lead trainer has a personal situation to support a family member, which may require his work out of town for some time over the summer. It has been 15 16 years without pay since our lead trainer has had any significant vacation.
Schedule Change
After some discussion our board of directors made the decision to use the months from May until September to develop new curriculum and related grants, attract new volunteers to help, and strengthen our mentoring and training capabilities.
We will remain open most days Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM for public access to Internet and our computers, the Gaming Group will continue to meet on alternate Fridays 7:00PM until 10:30PM, and we anticipate resuming Federal SCSEP program Senior Aides training, Financial & Time Literacy classes, and our new STEM programs in September 2019.
