Financial Peace for Teens

Posted on January 4, 2023January 4, 2023 by John Nash

Join the millions who never worry about moneyFor the entire family

The Ramsey Plus Membership that is available to your family for free through our site license has something for everyone in your family. With courses like Jump Start, Smart Money Smart Kids, Legacy Journey and Budgeting That Actually Works, people in every walk of life now have access to financial education customized for exactly where they are on their money journey.

Using the EveryDollar app, people can create budgeting habits that help them take control of their money every month. With the Financial Calculator people can see the eventual result from any series of deposits ($20/month is a valid amount when we are just starting out) they make into a retirement fund. And with the new BabySteps app, they can track their progress and see how quickly they can reach their goals.

My concern in this post is that adults should include their teens in our Financial Peace classes. All too often we are so accustomed to thinking of our teen as a child, that we totally miss the fact that they are an adult in training. Yes, sometimes they are very young, but sometimes they are very mature. We need to actively focus our effort in the few remaining years that we have them at home with us to Train Them Up. Training someone is different than just managing them. When we train someone we are preparing them for a job, to take their place in life, eventually, as a full adult.

Think of your teen as an adult in training

It’s your job (as the adult of the house) to teach your teen what they need to know for that moment you send them off to college, trade school, or even their own apartment. But you don’t have to be a finance professor to teach your teen how to save money. You can show them by example. Remember: More is caught than taught. You’ll want to show them how to earn money, create a budget, give, save and spend wisely.

While you’re teaching your teen about money, you’ll also be showing them by how you handle your family’s finances day to day. Teach them to coupon, to shop, to evaluate deals, to say “no”.

One of the best things you can do is help them prepare for their future. Do they want to get their own place? Do they want to go to college? Trade school? Start a business? Help them start thinking about these things early on with the 7 Baby Steps.

These steps will help them prepare for emergencies, save for college, and even get a head start on investing. They may not understand it now, but don’t worry. They’ll thank you later – especially when they graduate with a debt-free degree.

To Survive and Thrive your teen needs to know the truth about money and marketing

To succeed in life your teen needs to know what you know. The first thing your teen will see when she or he hits the college campus is a pileup of smiling credit card mongers trying to get your teen hopelessly trapped in debt for the rest of their life. The “Financial Aid” department will be right behind them telling them “everyone has to have a student loan”! Most teens are unprepared to deal with this kind of entrapment ploy. The number one reason people drop out of college is not bad grades – it is debt.  Now is the time to train up your teen so they can handle the very adult marketing pressures designed to get and keep them in debt for the rest of their life. There are very practical alternatives but those don’t make banksters rich. Rachel Cruze explains several ways your teen can get their college degree without any need to give in to the extreme pressure to sign a student loan.

Your teen can have the very same training available to adults in our Financial Peace class. Bring your teen WITH you. Anyone one sixteen (16) or older should be able to handle a 60 minute video and the following discussion, it will actually be a bonding time for you and your teen going through Financial Peace class together, and give you important topics to discuss. Also, your teen will probably have questions and that will make the discussion more interesting. The information in this class will help them prepare for emergencies, save for college, and even get a head start on investing. They may not understand it now, but don’t worry. They’ll thank you later—especially when they graduate with a debt-free degree.

You know your teen best of anyone, and if your teen is not ready to be in class with adults, then she or he can use the computers in the adjacent room where they will still hear the video and be influenced by it and our discussion, and if they want to participate they can join us – we are flexible that way.  More is caught than taught. Being together with you and watching how you apply what we discuss in class at home will be a stronger influence than anything Mr. Ramsey presents, although the videos are very persuasive.

When teens are treated as adults they can (at least for a time) act as adults. Your teen may have her or his own Ramsey Plus Membership through our site license, for free. The Ramsey Plus Membership is a full membership, and it lasts one year from the moment they register. They may not fully grasp all the information this year, but who does? They can play the videos on their own later, too. They will remember and use it more later, and it will make a life changing difference by empowering them to live a successful, prosperous life.

The program is already paid through a grant – just come!

The best part? The whole membership is a gift from our public charity to you.

We meet online Monday 7:00PM Eastern time on Zoom, or in-person 7:00PM Thursday, so you won’t even have to leave home.

Our next Financial Peace classes will start January 9 & 12, 2023 — NEXT WEEK!!
